English Secondary Resources

These pages provide links to a number of website resources (see below) and general information, research, policies, local SOWs etc. (links to the left).

General

KS3 Strategy

This is the most important website for information about all to do with the Strategy. Many of the materials produced by the Strategy are available here to download. There are also support materials, case studies etc. which are invaluable.

Qualification and Curriculum Authority (QCA):
www.qca.org.uk

This website provides information about all public examinations. As well as details about testing, test analysis and other useful downloadable information, the QCA website provides accounts of a great deal of up-to-date research on a range of issues to do with teaching and learning.

National Literacy Trust
www.literacytrust.org.uk

Some excellent and thoughtful articles and selected reports on issues to do with literacy. Superb source of information about other websites to do with literacy generally.

National Association of Teachers of English
www.nate.org.uk

This is the website of the professional teaching of English organisation. In need of developing, the website offers information about NATE events and publications. The members’ area offers a forum for discussion and a range of articles.

Resources

National Grid for Learning: NGfL
www.ngfl.gov.uk

Secondary English lists useful websites and has some of its own materials. There is also an NGfL Virtual Teachers’ Centre – English, which offers a forum for discussion and sharing ideas.

Teachit

Probably the most successful of the websites for English support materials and lesson plans. Enormous range of resources for KS3 and other stages. Some free, but in order to download most of the resources you need to subscribe. Costs - individual £29.95 per year, department £125.

Andrew Moore’s Resource Site

This site provides a very useful range of teacher resources and links. It is particularly strong on GCSE and A/S & A Level resources and ideas.

English Online

A subscription site for whole of secondary English. Interactive site to use with pupils. Plenty of free resources.

English Resources

Free teaching and revision resources. Linked to Amazon. Lookiing a bit dated but worth checking some of the materials.

Contains resources and lesson plans

Lots of free resources. Covers all Key Stages. Useful on grammar activities.

Fret

Some good quality lesson plans and worksheets. Subscription site. £15 individual, £75 school

The Guardian unlimited site

Offers a number of free lesson plans for KS3, KS4 and KS5.

Creative Writing etc.

There are an increasing number of sites which provide examples of children’s writing, often allowing the children to ‘publish’ themselves on that site. The following short list shows some which have more of a secondary ‘feel’ about them.

Journalism

This site provides lots of examples of journalism from children from ages 11 – 18 which have been published.

Kids on the net

Some useful support materials and examples of a range of children’s writing. It includes a teacher’s ‘portal’ and ideas for creative writing.
