The Primary National Strategy promotes manageable and meaningful assessment and record-keeping. The assessment summary provided here gives an overview of recommended procedures.
Many schools have found the Year group profile sheets available to download here a useful way to help teachers be aware of pupils' attainment at the start of the year in relation to age-related expecations . They can inform decisions about target groups and differentiation.
Also available here are key objective record grids for the renewed primary framework (in both word and excel). The original grids are also still available; schools that would prefer to do so, could continue to use these versions as they are an equally valuable way to record pupils' progress in key aspects of mathematics learning and to use this information to inform teaching & learning.
The Bristol numeracy consultants have produced assess and review materials to support half-termly assess and review and pupil targets. As schools move to working from the renewed framework, these materials can still be used to support teacher assessment.
Guidance on moderating mathematics provides advice on how to organise termly meetings to ensure that assessment judgments that inform the key objective records are robust and secure.
Schools that have moved to planning from the renewed primary framework may find the objective overview grids helpful. They show when objectives appear in the planning units. As teachers adapt the units, the records can be used to keep track of which objectives have been covered when. We gratefully acknowledge Worcestershire LA who have produced and shared this resource.
Advice on how to use Assessment for Learning strategies in mathematics teaching and learning, including ‘I can…' statements and excellent assessment questions for every objective, can be found on the on-line primary framework.
