"Pupils who do not respond to the actions taken by their school to improve their behaviour may be at risk of permanent exclusion from school. Such pupils may need a planned intervention to reduce the risk of exclusion. DfES Circular 10/99 introduced the concept of a pastoral support programme (PSP) to provide this additional help.
A PSP is an intervention determined by the school to help to improve a pupil's behaviour. A PSP should automatically be set up for a pupil who has been excluded several times from school for fixed periods, though a PSP can be set up for any pupil the school identifies as at risk of failure at school because of disaffection.
A PSP should identify precise and realistic behavioural outcomes for the child to work towards. A nominated member of staff should oversee the PSP. It should be agreed with parents, who should be regularly informed about their child's progress."
