Schools request EP consultation about individual pupils through their regular contact with a named EP. All requests for full consultation must have been discussed and agreed with the child's parents/carers.
More general requests for school-focused support or training can be discussed when the EP visits the school, or with the Senior EP for the relevant District.
Schools must have regard to the staged procedures of the Code of Practice. Before requesting a full consultation with the EP, the school will usually have provided its own assessment and support for the pupil through an Individual Education Plan.
Parents/Carers
As the focus of EPs work is on schools and learning the first point of contact for most parents/carers is via the school.
Parents/carers do refer directly to the Service, but the EP would always in these cases want to link with the child's school and to help all parties use the staged procedures of the Code appropriately.
Pre-school children are often referred via the Health Service.
