Newly Qualified Teachers

A. Registration and Responsibilities

Schools within this LA have proved highly successful in the training, development and assessment of Newly Qualified Teachers. Dates for the receipt of assessments for these teachers are sent to all schools with NQTs. Crucial to this process are the induction tutors and senior staff who work so hard to support these teachers.

Where NQTs move to another school part way through their induction year it is the responsibility of the Headteacher to pass onto the receiving school copies of assessments and other relevant documentation.

  1. Registration of NQTs

All NQTs should be registered with Recruitment & Retention using the appropriate form. This will ensure the release of the funding from the LA to support the induction year, currently £3,000 a year for a full time NQT. For an NQT employed full time for six terms from September , the first four terms funding will be transferred into the school's budget. The fifth and sixth terms' finance will be transferred to the school after the start of the new financial year in April. For a teacher on fixed term contracts, and / or part-time, the funding will be adjusted on a pro-rata basis.

In addition, all NQTs on the register will receive a copy of the Bristol NQT induction handbook . Copies of the induction tutor handbook will be sent to all schools with NQTs. Copies of these have been posted to all NQTs registered with the LA.

If you have any queries concerning registration of NQTs please address these to Paul Patterson, The Fonthill Centre (see below for contact details).

  2. Schools' responsibilities for the support, monitoring and assessment of NQTs

Full details of these are contained in the Induction Tutor's Handbook.
Most important is the NQT's Action Plan which will outline the programme of support for the NQT. This must be submitted to Paul Patterson by the end of September.

Training for Induction Tutors takes place in the Summer Term and again early in September. Courses for NQTs will be run as part of the Continuing Professional Development programme starting early in September each year.

For NQTs on full time contracts who took up post from 1 September, schools will be notified of the exact return dates for the three assessment forms (the forms are to be found on the website or in the handbook)

For those NQTs who are on part time contracts or those who take up post part way through the year, assessment dates will be adjusted accordingly and schools notified.

Assessment forms are to be returned to Paul Patterson, The Fonthill Centre, Stanton Road, Southmead, Bristol BS10 5SJ. Tel 0117 353 3843 or email paul.patterson@bristol.gov.uk.
