Graduate and Registered Teacher Programmes

Introduction

The Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) and Registered Teacher Programme (RTP) are employment or school based routes to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). They provide an alternative to a university or college route to QTS and are popular with staff who have already worked in schools. The GTP is for graduates and the RTP is for undergraduates with at least 240 University Credits (such as a Foundation Degree) who commence training for QTS whilst they complete their degree studies. GCSEs in Maths, English (and Science for Primary) or their equivalents are required for all routes to QTS.

Primary

There are 10 Primary GTP salaried places each year in the Bristol area with the University of Gloucestershire (see below). The deadline for applications is November 30 th to commence training the following year. There is considerable competition for places and applicants will normally have already worked in a school as a Teaching Assistant or similar. The University will find a school for all successful applicants and will provide local support from a Training Manager. There are a small number of RTP places with the Robert Owen Consortium (see below).

Secondary

There are a variable number of Secondary salaried places with the University of Gloucestershire and University of Bath. Trainees must find their own school for training and most schools offer places to staff who are already working for them, perhaps as a Cover Supervisor or Teaching Assistant. There is considerable competition for non-shortage subjects, less so for shortage subjects (Science, Maths, Technology, English, Languages, Music and RE). There are a small number of RTP places with the Robert Owen Consortium (see below).

Applications

Applications have to be made to a recognised training organisation. In our area these are:
