In Bristol there are over 25 supplementary (sometimes known as complementary) schools. They have all been set up by local faith groups, Black or minority ethnic communities or voluntary agencies. These can provide a range of educational opportunities outside usual school hours either related to cultural or religious issues, or the home languages of the particular community.
Information about supplementary schools
A Directory of all supplementary schools in Bristol is available to the right of this page. (See Bristol Supplementary Schools' directory 2007/8). In addition, a regular newsletter is produced to keep mainstream and supplementary schools up to date with new developments and training opportunities.
An exciting new course has been developed for supplementary school tutors in partnership with the University of the West of England and applications for places are currently being sought. (See the link to the poster Meeting learners' needs in Supplemenary Schools for more information).
More recently, supplementary schools have been setting up courses focused around raising Black and minority ethnic achievement such as study classes in core subjects, revision classes etc.
In addition, there is a Mainstreaming Supplementary Schools Support Project (MSSSP), based at the City Academy, which links four secondary schools: Whitefield, Speedwell, Fairfield and the City Academy with Muslim supplementary schools; Amana (for Somali pupils), Bristol Islamic Classes and the Bangladeshi Association. They have organised GCSE revision classes with mainstream teachers, and are now extending the service to a range of inner city primary schools and Key Stage 3.
The City Academy has also developed a specific African Caribbean attainment project which has been piloted across key stages.
Children and Young People’s Services has funding from Neighbourhood Renewal to employ a Supplementary Schools’ Coordinator to support the sector, facilitate a Supplementary Schools’ Forum and to provide advice and information. This project also includes a small pot of funding for new supplementary schools.
Amana and CYPS Somali Education Day-21st July 2007 at Barton Hill Settlement.
A day has been organised for any Somali family interested in finding out more about supporting their children in the education system. Prior booking essential - see the links to the poster and booking form on the left, at the top of this page.
