Developing Equalities and Inclusion Policies in schools (including Gender and Disability Equality Schemes)

Equalities and Inclusion

The ‘Developing Equalities and Inclusion Policies’ document is designed to help schools to develop the whole range of inclusion / equalities policies required by legislation, and Ofsted's Inspection Framework. It outlines the statutory duties and proposes a policy framework, but also has model policies which schools can update and make their own, such as the Race Equality Policy and Access Plan.

Schools should also have in place a policy that shows how they intend to meet the needs of bi-lingual or multilingual pupils. Please see the Policy on Multilingualism.

For training on equalities legislation and positive action please contact Ruth Pickersgill, contact details below.

However, recent legislation also requires schools to develop a Gender Equality Scheme and Disability Equality Scheme. The process must involve gathering data, consulting with stakeholders and undertaking impact assessments on policies. Both schemes should include 3 year action plans and a process for monitoring and review.

Guidance on producing a Gender Equality Scheme and Disability Equality Scheme are available through the links on this page.

Also available is a template for combining all three schemes into one document.

When drawing up their schemes, schools should consider the corporate Gender, Race and Disability Equality Schemes.
