New Duties for schools
The new Education and Inspection Act imposed a duty on governing bodies to promote community cohesion, which should be implemented in September and inspected by Ofsted. Draft guidance for schools on the Duty is available on the DfES site (use the link on the right)and briefing for Heads and Chairs of Governors is available on the left..
Briefings were provided for schools on community cohesion issues. All the presentations and documents are available by using the links on this page.
Diversity and Curriculum Review
Sir Keith Ajegbo made a series of recommendations aimed at promoting diversity across the school’s curriculum for Citizenship Education such as an element an 'Identity and Diversity: Live together in the UK', (use the link "Teachernet publication" on the right).
The Equalities and Inclusion Team is supporting schools to develop community cohesion and tackle racist incidents.
In partnership with SACRE last year, we held a Young People’s Interfaith Conference, which will be repeated on July 5 th 2007 at the Council House (see report). In addition, we surveyed attitudes to different faiths in five secondary schools (see report) and used the information to inform the conference.
Each year CYPS takes an active part in Refugee Week activities, and last year funded an evaluation of 48 Streets, a Forum Theatre Production addressing tensions between Somali and African Caribbean pupils. We are now based in the Woodward Community Resource Centre in Fishponds, which has been set up to promote community cohesion.
