Children and Young People’s Services offer a limited number of retainers to social work students who are in their final (or occasionally penultimate) year of a qualifying social work degree. The purpose of the scheme is to recruit qualifying Social Workers into our social care teams, primarily into the Duty Assessment and Locality teams. Each retainer is worth £5000 and also gives priority to do placements with CYPS. In return, students are committed to working for us for two years after graduation.
The retainers are awarded in the autumn term. Applications to the 2007/08 scheme are now closed. Details of the retainer scheme 2008/09 will be made available on this page and circulated to the universities in October 2008
Further information on the scheme - including frequently asked questions and guidance on completing the application form - is available to the left. There is also a sample generic job description and employee specification for a Childcare Social Worker.
The General Social Care Council offer a bursary to social work students worth up to £3000 per year. Please follow the link on the right for further information on this scheme. Other funding may be available through your university.
