The Common Assessment Framework (CAF) for children and young people is a shared assessment tool used across agencies in England. It is:
- A simple process to allow practitioners and families to gather information about the needs and strengths of a child based on discussions with the child, their family and other practitioners as appropriate
- A process for undertaking an assessment to develop an understanding where a child/young person appears to have additional needs that are not addressed by the services currently working with them e.g. teachers, GP
- A key part of delivering integrated frontline services that are and focused around the needs of children and young people
- A standardised approach to conducting an assessment of a child's additional needs and deciding how those needs should be met
- The key early intervention referral tool between agencies
In Bristol we have a rolling programme of training for managers, practitioners and administrative staff in integrated working, completing the CAF form, and using the e-caf system in Bristol.
