Primary Review

Highridge Infant School & Bishopsworth CE VC Junior School
Consultation is taking place on the proposed amalgamation of Highridge Infant School & Bishopsworth CE VC Junior School with effect from September 2009. The City Council is consulting on the closure of the current infant and junior schools with effect from 31 August 2009, in order for the new 315 place primary school to open on 1 September 2009. The Diocese of Bristol is consulting on the establishment of the new primary school, which would be a Church of England Voluntary Controlled School. Victoria Park Infant and Junior Schools

Sea Mills
Consultation has taken place on the proposed amalgamation of Sea Mills Infant and Sea Mills Junior with effect from September 2009. It is planned to provide a new school building at Riverleaze which would also include Children’s Centre provision. Weston Park Primary School and Bluebell Valley Nursery School
Consultation has taken place on the proposed amalgamation of Weston Park Primary School and Bluebell Valley Nursery School with effect from September 2009. Details of the proposal are contained in the consultation document and statutory notice available by using the links to the left of this page.
The consultation responses have been considered and the post-consultation report and statutory notice are available by clicking on the links to the left of this page. As a result of the responses received from the governing bodies of both schools it has been decided to defer the implementation of the proposal to September 2010. The details of the proposal have been referred to the Schools Adjudicator for a decision on the proposed amalgamation.
Secondary Schools
Five new Academies opened in Bristol on 1 September 2008.
- Oasis Academy, Brightstowe, to replace Portway Community College
- Oasis Academy, Bristol, to replace Hengrove Community Arts College
- Merchants’ Academy Withywood, to replace Withywood Community School
- Colston’s Girls School
- Bristol Cathedral Choir School
- Brislington Enterprise College opened in its new building in September 2008, as part of the BSF programme.
- The Bridge Learning Campus, which will deliver an innovative approach to all-through education provision in South Bristol, will open in new buildings in January 2009.
- The Bristol Metropolitan College (formerly Whitefield Fishponds School) opened its new buildings, delivered under the national Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, on 21 April 2008.
- The Bristol Brunel Academy was officially opened by Prime Minister Gordon Brown in September 2007 and was the first school in the UK to be redeveloped and reopened under the BSF programme.
- The new Redland Green School building opened to pupils in September 2007. Located in Redland Court Road, the building will eventually accommodate 945 11-16 year-olds together with 450 places for post-16. It is also home to the secondary department of Claremont School, offering 50 places for pupils with physical impairment, severe, profound and multiple learning difficulties.
- The new Fairfield High School building opened in April 2006 at Allfoxton Road. The school provides 1080 places for 11-16 year-olds, together with inclusive provision for 40 deaf and hearing impaired pupils.
- The first phase of PFI school rebuilds, Bedminster Down, Henbury, Monks Park and Portway opened in 2005/6.
Primary Schools
Seven new primary schools opened in September 2006 and one in September 2007 following amalgamations of existing schools.
The new Primary School and Children’s Centre in Barton Hill opened its new purpose-designed building in November 2007. The Children’s Centre will offer a range of services for families. The building also provides community facilities and ‘extended school’ provision.
Special Educational Needs
Brislington Enterprise College – It has been agreed to make the following changes:
- To establish autistic provision at Brislington Enterprise College from September 2008.
- To change the management of the physically impaired provision (Courtlands Unit), to be established on the site of Brislington Enterprise College, from Florence Brown Community School to Brislington Enterprise College from September 2009.
Kingsdon Manor Special School - On 10 April the Cabinet agreed that Kingsdon Manor Special School should close on 31 August 2008.
