School Self-evaluation in Bristol

Introduction

Effective self-evaluation is now recognised as a key factor in sustained school improvement. The Bristol Self-evaluation Framework has been developed by headteachers and education officers in Bristol. Its purpose is to provide a shared tool for developing self-evaluation and a common reference point for sharing judgements within and between schools. The areas for evaluation and criteria included are in line with the new Ofsted inspection framework and reflect other nationally developed quality standards.

The close alignment between the Bristol SSE framework and the inspection framework has meant that schools, that have used the Bristol SSE framework, have been able to complete their SEFs more effectively.

The core Framework has three components:

  • Evaluation Workbook
  • Summary of Outcomes
  • Quality Standards for Self-evaluation

In addition to the Bristol SSE Framework, the LA has developed guidance for schools on completing their SEF.

The Bristol Self-evaluation Framework is a key component within the LA School Improvement Strategy. The monitoring, support and challenging role of the School Improvement Service is linked directly to an annual cycle of School Self-evaluation. This cycle focuses on:

Terms School self-evaluation
Terms 1 and 2 Achievement and Standards & Learners’ Personal Development and Well Being
Terms 3 and 4 Quality of Provision
Terms 5 and 6 Leadership and Management including Governance

While these aspects are interlinked, the distinct emphasis in each of the terms is designed to ensure an appropriate focus on each.

In addition to the core framework document, additional support materials have been developed for use at different phases. As well as these a number of other local and national materials to support School Self Evaluation are available.
