Children & Young People's Services

One workforce - making a difference for every child

You are here: Early Years and Childcare Service

Children's Centres

A Children's Centre is an early years and childcare setting which provides a range of high quality, family support, early learning and childcare services to local families. It will be sited on or close to a primary school wherever possible

The key features of a children’s centre are

  • Day care and learning will always be integrated for the children, in the same place
  • A qualified Early Years Teacher will lead the development of learning within each centre
  • A range of parenting, family support and family health services will be available

In Bristol, 9 Children’s Centres were developed in Phase 1 of the programme (2004 - 2006) and a further 15 were developed in Phase 2 (2006 – 2008).

Phase 3 will ensure that by March 2010 every community should have access to a Sure Start Children's Centre.

The level of services will be tailored to meet the different needs of each community, fitting around existing provision.

Children's Centres in less deprived areas of the city will not be required to provide childcare, however they will deliver family support services to the community.

Current daycare charges are as follows:

0-2 year olds are £4.41 per hour, 2-3 year olds are £4.10 per hour & 3+ year olds (including wraparound) are £3.78 per hour.
